Community Matters

I am glad to be a part of the African American community. To define African American can be quite complex. This term describes a very diverse group of people in American society. Being an African American male in this country is a hard but enjoyable task. I don’t ever like to pull the race card, but honestly I have to deal with different problems than most others.  We are a proud and cultural people with a lot to offer society, but like a whole lot of people we don’t always have the resources to make the difference that we want to. Year up is an excellent program because it allows people like me with potential to go far in the world but wont necessarily get the change to do so. I recently read a short article about communities and the author said that you are where you work; pretty much saying that people in this country have lost the value of a good community. I think that the African American community still understands the value of togetherness in their neighborhoods and have to stick together to survive in the country. There was a time when all they had was family, which included the community as a whole and the church. They developed their own values and traditions that may be different from mainstream society.

The Past is Practice

What are some of the things you learned about yourself as a student or a professional in Module I? Did you surprise yourself in any way? Were you proud of yourself? Were you at all disappointed in yourself? Why?
One of the main thing I learned about myself in the first module was that I can still survive in a college setting. When I began the program I didn't think that I could get back in the rhythm of going to school everyday, doing homework, and answering to someone that is not paying me enough to survive. I had to really focus on the bigger picture and "swallow my pride" to get to a place where I want to be. I really surprised myself by taking the program as serious as I did and I'm glad that I was able to make it through the first module. I plan to work even harder throughout module 2 to build up my points, be a better student, and professional young man.

As a person who is very often not on time, I was very proud of myself in the last month and a half to have no late infractions. When I first joined year up I was still trying to get into the grove of waking up early, as a result to that I was late more times than I would have like to be. At first I was very disappointed about my attendance but as It got easier to get here on time my confidence rose.

Neighborhoods...."You are Where You Live"

Hello, my name is Theodore J Conelius-Adkins. I am currently a student at City College of San Francisco studying information technology and a proud member of the Year Up program in San Francisco, California. I plan to obtain a degree in Computer Network Information Technology and transfer to Cal State East Bay to further pursue my IT career. I consider myself to be a very outgoing, motivated, and intelligent person; I understand the importance of smart career decisions.  My recent research on the job market in today’s economy, the smartest and fastest growing opportunity to further myself in the corporate world is Information Technology.
In my spare time I enjoy playing jazz piano and over the year I have become a somewhat known jazz pianist in the East Bay. I am a single parent of a beautiful two-year old boy who I work hard to set a positive example and build a sturdy foundation for his future. Being a hard working dedicated man, I believe that with the right training and guidance I would be a huge asset to any company in any work setting. I understand that nothing in life will be given to you but I have the ethics, morals, and proper background to do whatever it takes to succeed in life. My aspirations for my future is to live comfortably in a home that I own in a community that is safe for my family and I. Earning an honest living doing something I enjoy is something in my opinion everyone should strive for. If you are looking for a reliable leader in your company or corporation, I have what it takes.

Credit

Credit card companies collect a huge bulk or almost all of their money through late fees and interest, so the smartest possible thing for them to do would be to put credit cards in the hands of people who have little or no finance experience. The young and the uneducated are more likely to run up credit card debt and become overwhelmed with interest, which is almost the primary and most dishonest source of income for the credit card companies. Young and uneducated people are specifically targeted by credit card companies because they are more profitable to them. People tend to have lower income levels and rely more heavily on credit for purchases so naturally they want to swarm them. As such, there is a higher chance for young, uneducated populations to carry a balance over the grace period and, thus, be charged interest. The pictures of the potential card designs are printed in bright, attractive colors, while the information that really defines the relationship between the company and the cardholder is in small print on a black and white piece of paper, which is usually separate from the glossy images of the flashy cards and potential purchases. Credit card companies are interested only in making money. The companies have a history of attacking people with a false hope of helping them pay for things they do or don’t need regardless of their ability to qualify for these cards.  Banks and pretty much all companies in this county rely on the income from people who get themselves into too much debt. In closing, if you know they want you to fail, steer clear for them and find another way to manage your money. Be Smart!
